Multi-professional independent prescribing

TVW Primary Care School have funded places available to support eligible allied health professionals (AHPs) and registered nurses to complete an independent prescribing (IP) module, and gain their ‘IP annotation’.

What is independent prescribing?

The TVW and Kent, Surrey and Sussex Primary Care Schools have collaborated to produce the Multi-professional independent prescribing in General Practice document [PDF, size: 273 KB]. This resource provides details on prescribing rights for professions eligible, ongoing development and governance processes.

Who can apply?

The following professions, working in Primary Care are eligible to attain an IP annotation, provided they meet their regulatory and legislative requirements to do so:

  • Pharmacists (please note: any pharmacists qualifying under the 2021 pharmacist initial educational standards from 2026 onwards will be annotated as IP upon registration)
  • Paramedics
  • Physiotherapists
  • Podiatrists
  • Registered nurses

Please note that you must check that you meet the entry criteria of your preferred university, as well as the NHS England funding criteria, before applying.

How to apply

AHPs and registered nurses

Submit the expressions of interest independent prescribing funding application Microsoft Form or scan the QR code to request IP funding.

Your funding request will be reviewed by the Primary Care School team, and you will receive an email outcome with details on how to apply via your chosen provider, should your request be approved.

Course providers

The current offer for independent prescribing modules is for the universities listed below, while every effort is made to fund individuals to their preferred university there may be occasions that you are offered funding to a different university.

Pharmacists

Pharmacists wishing to become independent prescribers can view the funded offers on the NHS England Workforce, Training and Education (WT&E) Pharmacy webpage.

As an independent prescriber, it is essential to maintain competence through continuing professional development (CPD) and revalidation as per your regulatory requirements.

Non medical prescribing update day

Bournemouth University provide a non medical prescribing update course, which can be funded through CPD for eligible AHP’s and registered nurses. To apply for funding for this update course, submit an expression of interest form.
