Cancer care is one of the NHS Long Term Plan’s key priorities – focussing on prevention, earlier diagnosis, better treatment and living with cancer. Having access to more skilled staff in the right areas will be key to delivering on that strategy. Particular areas of focus are supporting the increase of people with appropriate skills in reporting radiography, endoscopy and sonography.

Locally, we work with the Wessex Cancer Alliance to support them in delivering the cancer deliverables within the Long-Term Plan from an education, training and workforce transformation perspective. Current funded work includes working to achieve a more cohesive, integrated service for cancer patients, with improved communication channels across Primary and Secondary Care, reviewing current provisions for psychological support for cancer patients and developing a programme for specialist nurses in each of the 12 tumour groups. We are members of the Wessex Cancer Board, led by the Alliance.
We also work with local hospices to support the education and training of their cancer staff.
