Anaesthesia Associates

Anaesthesia Associates (AAs) are highly trained, skilled practitioners who work as part of the team under the direction and supervision of a Consultant Anaesthetist.

HEE aims

Health Education England are working to:

– Support a sustainable increase in the AA training pipeline to 2025
– Support the development of more AA training programmes across England
– Develop a sustainable funding model, to include an apprenticeship training route
– Develop the educational capacity and infrastructure to support AA workforce expansion

Blended learning programme

Health Education England are undertaking a national commission of blended learning programmes for AAs, ready for delivery before March 2023.

National funding model

To help establish a sustainable supply route for Anaesthesia Associates and support delivery of the plan to tackle the Covid-19 backlog of elective care, Health Education England are providing a national funding offer until April 2024, for up to a combined total of 120 students per year across HEE regions.

The success of the approach and continued need for this level of funding will be reviewed prior to any decisions around funding beyond April 2024. Funding, accessed via HEE regions, includes a consistent salary support offer for all trainees, a contribution towards tuition fees and educational supervision in the workplace.

For further information about funding, please visit the HEE Anaesthesia Associates webpage or contact the HEE National MAPS Team via MAPs@hee.nhs.uk

South East engagement event

On 13 September 2022, HEE Wessex (on behalf of the South East) helped to organise an interactive showcase event to raise awareness and provide attendees from across the South East with the information they require to explore and develop the role of Anaesthesia Associate within the region.

Please visit the Anaesthesia Associates – Developing a Stronger Anaesthesia Team for the Future page to view the programme, slides and recordings from this highly successful event.
