Diagnostic activity is crucial to a large number of clinical pathways and is categorised under the following pillars; endoscopy, imaging, pathology, physiological science, and genomics. Having access to more skilled staff in the right areas helps support the reduction in waiting times and increases the likelihood of early diagnosis leading to better care and outcomes for patients.
A national review of diagnostics was completed in 2020 by Sir Mike Richards which made multiple recommendations to support the transformation of diagnostics services. Work to support these ambitions is in place regionally, working with partners including providers, systems and NHS England and Improvement Diagnostics Programme. Initiatives include:
- Training Academies in Endoscopy and Imaging to support the increase in the numbers of learners and increased numbers of staff able to enter the workforce.
- Increasing the number of Radiographers who can contribute to image interpretation and reporting within clinical imaging teams
- HEE Clinical Endoscopy programme to support workforce capacity and capability in response to increasing demand for endoscopy services.
- Apprenticeships opportunities across multiple pillar areas
- Increasing training numbers and posts for a number of medical and scientific professions
