Dr Serena Cottrell has been a Wessex PSW Specialist Support Group (SSG) Exam expert since 2021.
Serena is a Consultant Paediatric Emergency Physician at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust. She was originally employed at University Hospital Southampton as a paediatric intensive care consultant in 2003 before changing specialty and moving to Portsmouth in 2012.
Before studying medicine Serena completed a psychology degree and during this time trained as a counsellor.
She has a long standing interest in education and successfully applied for Wessex to become a registrar training site for both Paediatric Intensive Care and Paediatric Emergency Medicine and was the Intercollegiate Regional Advisor in Paediatric Emergency Medicine.
Serena has also worked at the University of Southampton, Faculty of Medicine since 2006 as pastoral tutor, disability lead and year 3 lead where she has supported students who have failed exams for nearly 2 decades. Recently, following working closely with ACMA (African Caribbean Medical Association) and MMS (Muslim Medics Southampton) Serena has developed an interest in differential attainment and working towards equality and inclusion.
