There are a wealth of educational opportunities for Palliative Medicine Residents in Wessex including:
- A Palliative Medicine training day every 4 months. This is trainee run and designed to ensure exposure to some of the curriculum competencies that can be harder to meet in a workplace setting
- Oncology training days (bimonthly – run by the Oncology trainee committee). These are site specific on a rotational programme so Residents should get the opportunity to attend a teaching session on each cancer site over the course of training.
- Each training site has their own educational programmes which may include Journal club, Grand Round, departmental teaching and tutorials.
- Self Directed Learning Time (2 days/month – usually scheduled as a weekly half day pro-rata) for activities such as teaching preparation, quality improvement work, research and e-portfolio activity. Residents also use this time for attachments to other specialties such as chronic pain services, rehabilitation medicine and oncology.
- Regional network meetings of Multi-professional Palliative Medicine clinicians across the Wessex region (3 meetings a year, one face to face, two virtual).
- Opportunities to contribute to the Wessex Palliative Medicine Green Book
- Research Opportunities – Training sites within the rotation have been involved in national research studies (such as the Chelsea 2 study). Some trainees also take out of programmeapply for Out of Programme experience to undertake larger research projects.
- Clinical supervision – We are proud of our psychologist-led group clinical supervision sessions that Resident Doctors are able to regularly access (Teams) throughout their training. These have been very well evaluated.
