In 1965 the first day release course for GP trainees was established in Winchester and Southampton1 before eventually expanding across Wessex and the rest of the country. We are proud of our teaching legacy and our team of programme directors regularly evaluate the offering to ensure it remains relevant and useful to our GP trainees. Dependent on your stage of training you will attend different GP teaching. Please see below for more details.
ST1 / ST2 Teaching
GP ST1/ST2s from across Mid-Wessex come together for monthly GP teaching. These teaching sessions are facilitated and prepared by the programme directors and form part of a trainee’s working week. They combine a mixture of small group work and lectures on clinical and professional topics from both primary and secondary care colleagues and specialists.
All Mid-Wessex GPST1/2s attend monthly GP teaching. This usually falls on the third Wednesday morning of the month, 9.00am – 1.00pm. These sessions are hosted in-person and all trainees will be sent details in advance. During 2024-25 these will be held at The Potters Heron Hotel, Romsey.
Those GPST1/2s who are undertaking a placement in general practice will also attend, in addition to the teaching above, monthly GP Learning Sets. Learning Sets usually fall on the second Wednesday of the month, and are usually held in the mornings from 9.30am – 12.30pm. There are occasional dates when these will be held in the afternoon from 2.00pm – 5.00pm. These sessions are hosted in-person and all trainees will be sent details in advance. During 2024-25 these will be held at Personal Best Education Centre, Romsey.
Throughout the year there are often additional educational sessions on offer, including GP inductions or Wessex-wide teaching sessions.
ST1/2s should liaise with their ES and rota co-ordinator about accommodating the teaching timetable and working patterns.
ST3 Teaching
GP ST3s from across Mid-Wessex come together for GP teaching. These teaching sessions are facilitated and prepared by the programme directors and form part of a trainee’s working week. They combine a mixture of small group work and lectures on clinical and professional topics from both primary and secondary care colleagues and specialists.
ST3 teaching usually falls on the first, third, fourth and occasional fifth Wednesday morning of the month, 9.00am – 1.00pm. These sessions are hosted in-person and all trainees will be sent details in advance. During 2024-25 these will be held at Personal Best Education Centre, Romsey.
There are occasional sessions which are timetabled for a full day, 9.00am – 5.00pm, including two 2-day courses (‘Professional Development & Change Management’ and ‘Business Management’). Both courses are a core part of the teaching programme and attendance is expected.
ST3s should liaise with their ES and host practice about accommodating the teaching timetable and working patterns, for example agreeing whether Wednesday afternoons will be study sessions or back in practice.
Small group work is viewed as an important part of the programme offering ST3s the valuable opportunity to discuss difficult cases with peers as well as go into further detail about topics that may have been discussed in recent lectures. The programme directors are on hand to offer their experience and guidance, however ST3s are also given the opportunity to lead the focus of these sessions.
Out of Synch (OOS) Support Group: The ST3 teaching runs over 12 months and the OOS Group is provided for those who have completed the teaching but are still in training (e.g. less-than-full-time trainees). These sessions are usually held once a month, hosted online and facilitated by a programme director. ST3s will need to agree attendance with their GP trainer and use study leave/CPD to attend. Sessions will not run with less than two trainees.
