Core Psychiatry Training
Welcome to the core psychiatry training program in Wessex. We have a varied program to support training requirements including placements in forensic, liaison, perinatal and eating disorders.
Programme Structure
We offer around 60 training posts in Wessex. In general, the first year will be spent in adult or old age mental health. It can be in an inpatient or outpatient setting. The second year trainees will be able to spend time in different specialties as well as time in a developmental post (either child and adolescent or learning disability). The third year will focus on further specialty posts as well as another adult mental health post.
To help trainees gain varied experience in different settings and organisations they will need to do some travelling. The main locations for our six trusts are Dorset (Poole and Bournemouth) and Salisbury (West); Southampton, Winchester and Basingstoke (Central); Isle of Wight, Portsmouth, Havant, Gosport and Fareham (East). Trainees will be asked to rank posts they prefer from a list of vacancies once they have accepted a Wessex post.

- Fortnightly postgraduate courses in preparation for the MRCPsych examination and psychotherapy training
- Local weekly academic meetings, Balint groups and multidisciplinary case conferences
