Enhance Programme

Enhance in Wessex

The Enhancing Generalist Skills (Enhance) Programme is a national project designed to prepare the medical workforce with the necessary skills to assess and treat through a holistic lens. It has been adapted for the Foundation programme to equip clinicians with the generalist skills required to support the evolving and complex needs of our population. The Enhance programme is designed to allow participants to concurrently achieve the Foundation programme capabilities and curriculum.

Wessex Foundation School offers both Enhance Enable and Enhance Explore programmes.

Enable is a self-directed version of the Enhance programme, which allows Foundation doctors to work through six online modules to learn generalist skills and acquire certificates which can be used as evidence on their Horus ePortfolio. Three modules are completed in F1 and a further three modules in F2.

Participants are responsible for completing a workbook for each module during their allotted self development time (SDT). The workbooks provide suggested evidence for demonstrating the learning outcomes of the module. These outcomes can be supported with clinical, professional, or reflective work. Below is an overview of the modules and the 4 cross-cutting themes:

Enhance Enable is supervised by both the local Foundation Programme Director and Foundation Programme Coordinator, who can advise on how to register.

The workbooks are found on NHS Learning Hub. Foundation doctors can create their own account on the NHS Learning Hub using their GMC number.

Foundation doctors on the Enhance Explore programme (‘Explorers’) undertake specific Foundation programmes. Each Explore programme is bespoke to the Trust in which it will take place. All Explore programmes include a placement that supports development as a generalist. Explorers must undertake a quality improvement project which spans a minimum of 1-year.

Explore placements are supported by regional study days, known as Explorer Days. Each Explorer Day will focus on one of the 6 Enhance domains. The dates for 2026/2027 are as below:

F1 Days

Day 1 – 24th September 2026 at Wellington House, London
Day 2 – 11th February 2027 at Wellington House, London
Day 3 – 12th May 2027 at Wellington House, London

F2 Days
Day 4 – 30th October 2026 at Explorer House, Southampton
Day 5 – TBC
Day 6 – TBC

Explorers should contact their Foundation Programme Coordinator for support in the first instance.

Please note that the previous Enhance email address is being phased out.
