Continuing Professional Development

What is Continuing Professional Development?

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) refers to the ongoing process by which health care professionals maintain, improve and broaden their knowledge, skills and competence throughout their careers.

It is both a registered professional requirement, and a career development tool, ensuring staff can deliver safe, effective and up-to-date person-centred care, aligning with health population needs. All healthcare professionals have a responsibility to identify their CPD needs, and work with their employer to plan how those needs could be met.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Primary Care Training Hub provides access to funded CPD opportunities for eligible members of the primary care workforce. Whether you want to develop expertise in your current role, respond to a changing service need or take the next step in your career, we can help you explore the opportunities available.

Develop your skills. Strengthen your practice. Support better patient care.

What counts as CPD?

CPD can include the following:

Accredited or non-accredited courses, conferences, webinars, online learning, training modules and research.

Presenting at a conference, contributing to a professional body or participating in professional networks.

Reflecting on your practice, learning from feedback, shadowing a colleague or taking part in a committee or project.

Reading professional articles, guidance, research or books relevant to your practice.

The funding available through the Training Hub is intended to support formal education opportunities.

Mandatory training does not normally count towards CPD hours unless it relates specifically to your area of professional practice or specialism.

Find a CPD opportunity

Our course catalogue brings together the funded CPD opportunities currently available to eligible primary care professionals across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Before applying, please check:

  • The course content and entry requirements
  • The delivery method and location
  • The available dates
  • That you can commit to attending
  • That the course supports an identified development or service need

If you cannot find a suitable course in the current catalogue, please contact the HIOW Training Hub team or your Learning Environment Lead to discuss your development need and the options that may be available.

How to apply

  1. Discuss your development need with your line manager and obtain their support.
  2. Review the course catalogue and carefully check the course description, eligibility requirements, delivery method and dates.
  3. Complete the CPD funding application form with all the information requested.
  4. Wait for confirmation of the outcome before applying directly to the university or course provider.
  5. If your funding request is approved, you will receive further application or enrolment instructions by email.

[Apply for CPD funding]

Please do not apply directly to a course provider unless the course catalogue or application guidance specifically instructs you to do so.

If your application is successful

Funding approval does not always mean that you are automatically enrolled on the course. Please follow the application and enrolment instructions provided in your confirmation email.

If you are subsequently unable to attend, you must let the Training Hub team know as soon as possible. Failure to attend without notice may be recorded and shared with your practice or line manager, and could affect future funding applications.
