Opportunities in Wessex
The School of O&G currently offers training for the full seven years from ST 1-7, including a number of nationally approved training programmes for those who want to sub-specialise. We have strong links with the University of Southampton and offer encouragement to those who want to follow on an academic career.
Wessex has a strong tradition of less than full-time training (LTFT), and this is supported. Enquiries regarding LTFT should be directed to the Training Programme Director who also takes a lead in this for the school. Guidance is also available on our Less Than Full Time Training page. Inter-deanery transfers are also possible.
Wessex offers a range of courses – some are level specific and some are for all training levels. For more information please see our Learning and Development section.
SITMs Training in Wessex
The RCOG Special Interest Training Modules (SITMs) and Special Interest Professional Modules (SIPMs) programme in Wessex provides residents with advanced training to develop their skills aligned with the RCOG O&G Curriculum 2024. SITMs replace the former ATSM system and enable residents to build focused expertise from ST5 onwards, while maintaining a strong generalist foundation. The programme is designed to support informed career development through early and honest career conversations, transparent selection processes, and training opportunities that reflect both individual aptitude and regional workforce needs.
The Wessex SITM programme is open to doctors in formal training programmes (NTN), as well as SAS and Locally Employed Doctors (LEDs), and consultants, in line with RCOG principles of fairness and accessibility.
Training is competency based, delivered through a combination of service embedded learning and specialist sessions where required. Governance is provided through clear deanery oversight, defined roles for supervisors and preceptors, and robust quality assurance processes, ensuring that all doctors undertaking SITMs receive high quality training that supports safe, sustainable consultant level practice.
