Academic Foundation Programme (AFP) Recruitment

Please visit our application and interview process page if you wish to apply for 2021 programmes

The AFP application process is managed nationally by the UKFPO, but the interview process is managed locally by the Wessex Foundation School team. Please refer to the Applicant’s Handbook which is available on the UKFPO website for the full applicant timeline and recruitment process.

In the Wessex Foundation School there are 13 programmes available. Applicants are required to apply for their research post separately from the clinical rotation, from a selection of programmes which are available to view on the Oriel recruitment system and on our website. This permits the applicant to select the most suitable combination of research area and clinical rotation. The purpose of this is to match the research opportunities to the most suitable candidates rather than placing them in fixed programme choices.

Academic foundation trainees are allocated to one employing Trust for the entire two year programme. Please refer to the
Academic Foundation Programme page to view a list of available posts and the job description for each of these.

12 x Academic Research posts are available at University Hospitals Southampton NHS Foundation Trust
and
1 x Medical Education programme is available at Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust.

Successful candidates will be allocated rotations and academic research projects in accordance with their preference and score. Some academic units in Southampton will have more than one programme available. A maximum of 12 appointments can be made to programmes based at Southampton and 1 appointment can be made to the Medical Education programme in Salisbury.
