The TVW Primary Care School supports the following general practice nursing (GPN) training opportunities.

Thames Valley and Wessex

Advanced clinical practitioners are registered healthcare professionals educated to masters level or equivalent and have the skills and knowledge to take on expanded roles and scope of practice caring for patients.

Are you a Nurse or Nursing Associate new to supervising / assessing nursing students, would like to refresh your skills, or need to transition from a Nurse mentor / sign-off mentor* to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Standards for Supervision?

This workshop, run by the TVW Primary Care School, will provide you with the foundations needed to inspire the next generation of General Practice nurses.

*Please note, it is mandatory to transition to NMC Practice Supervisor / Assessor role if previously a qualified Nurse mentor. In addition, newly qualified nurses and nursing associates will graduate as ‘supervisor ready’ but are required to attend this course or another similar programme, to develop their skills as an assessor.

Thames Valley

The Fundamentals in Primary Care course is for qualified nurses or nursing associates new to General Practice to support their transition into Primary Care.

This course covers core clinical skills essential for nursing roles in Primary Care and includes an introduction to other key areas such as health promotion, screening and long-term condition management as well as offering leadership development and strengthening understanding of accountability, quality and governance.

The next fully funded cohort on the Fundamentals in Primary Care will run with Buckinghamshire New University in June 2023.

Wessex

Advanced practice

GPNs can study individual advanced practice modules at any of the local universities. These include history taking and physical examination, clinical decision making and independent prescribing. Southampton University also offers a PgCert for HTPA/DADM/IP.

Partly funded courses

Wessex Local Medical Committee (LMC) have a range of courses and webinars available for GPNs and allied health professionals working across Hampshire and Isle of Wight.

This includes Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH) contraceptive courses. For new to practice nurses, this course is available through the LMC. For advance training and long-acting reversible contraception (LARC), nurses need to study Online Theory Assessment (OTA) Exam. For more information, please contact justine.curran@nhs.net.

Fully funded courses

Care of clients with Long-term Conditions modules are available at Bournemouth University (BU) and can be studied at level 6 and 7. This unit will equip you with the knowledge and skills to recognise, assess and manage clients with a range of long term conditions. It will enable you to evaluate the evidence base for practice and critically reflect on their encounters with clients.

Care of clients with Minor Illness modules are available at Bournemouth University (BU) and can be studied at level 6 and 7. The aim of this unit is to equip you with the skills necessary to independently assess, plan, treat and safely discharge adult clients presenting with undifferentiated and undiagnosed minor illnesses.

Funding is available for asthma, COPD, diabetes, and heart failure modules, which can be studied at levels 5, 6 and/or 7. Long term condition refresher modules and spirometry updates are also available.

Voucher codes are issued following your application for funding, which you can use to book courses within the year.

The Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Programme is a 24-month master’s degree programme in healthcare leadership. It will equip you with confidence to challenge the status quo and drive real and lasting change to improve the patient experience.

GPN foundations courses are available at Bournemouth University (BU) and can be studied at level 6 and 7. This innovative course will enable the development of knowledge, deeper learning and understanding of the General Practice Nurse role for nurses new to primary care and wish to further enhance their clinical practice and leadership in their role.

The fellowship is offered to all new to practice GPNs who successfully apply to start the GPN foundations module at Bournemouth University. The GPN fellowship opportunity includes funding for the GPN foundations course level 7, (40 credits) plus one other level 7 module (20 credits) leading to a Post Graduate certificate.

There will also be independent support throughout the duration of the fellowship from the Queens Nursing Institute (QNI), which will include:

· Initial 1:1 with QNI- development action plan and aspirations

· Access to 1 action learning set per month (max 8 people)

· Clinical supervision/coaching/advice – this will be on an advisory capacity for professional guidance.

Blended learning – This 15-credit Injection Therapy module will introduce you to the theoretical and practical principles of injection therapy for musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions, providing you with the clinical skills to practice as a competent therapist in this area. Paediatric Presenting Conditions in Urgent and Primary Care modules are available at Bournemouth University (BU) and can be studied at level 6 and 7. This unit has been designed for registered healthcare professionals in primary care and urgent care services caring for both adults and children. It will help practitioners to develop their knowledge and skills in the assessment, planning and treatment of a range of minor ailments commonly presenting in children.
